What the role is:

The Fly Tipping Officer is responsible for investigating incidents of illegal waste dumping (fly-tipping) and enforcing local environmental laws to protect public spaces. This role involves patrolling designated areas, gathering evidence, issuing penalties, and working with local communities to prevent fly-tipping. The officer will collaborate with other enforcement agencies and educate the public on the legal and environmental impacts of fly-tipping.

Key Responsibilities:

Investigation of Fly-Tipping Incidents:

  • Investigate reports of fly-tipping, inspecting affected areas, and collecting evidence such as photos, witness statements, and surveillance footage.
  • Conduct on-site inspections of dumped materials to identify responsible parties, including sifting through waste to find identifying information.
  • Use surveillance equipment and coordinate covert monitoring operations in areas prone to fly-tipping.

Enforcement Actions:

  • Issue fixed penalty notices (FPNs) and legal notices to individuals or businesses found responsible for fly-tipping.
  • Prepare evidence and documentation for legal proceedings, ensuring cases are processed according to relevant regulations.
  • Collaborate with legal teams to prosecute offenders when necessary and attend court to present evidence.

Patrol and Monitoring:

  • Conduct regular patrols in areas known for or vulnerable to fly-tipping, including public parks, rural roads, and urban streets.
  • Monitor fly-tipping hotspots using mobile technology, surveillance cameras, and other tools to gather intelligence on illegal dumping activities.

Communication:

Express information clearly and concisely to ensure understanding.

Flexibility:

Adapt to change and work effectively in various situations and weather conditions.

Learning and Development:

Participate in our training course to gain insight into daily duties, current legislation, communication, and interaction aspects of the role, earning a recognized qualification in environmental awareness.
